Virtual Technology Review

Virtual technology is an emerging area of research for numerous domains and applications. VR is not without its limitations and challenges that need to be overcome to continue to develop and develop. These include technological limits that result in users feeling uneasy or sick when wearing a VR headset, the inaccessibility of VR due to the high cost and associated hardware and technical issues such as lack of standardization and compatibility among different devices.

In terms of learning, VR gives an opportunity to try out situations which are challenging or risky to tackle in real life, like a fear of flying or exposure to a traumatic situation. This is especially helpful for mental health treatments, such as PTSD. VR can assist patients to face these events safely.

VR can also enhance training for professional athletes, allowing them to practice their skills without having to travel to specific training facilities. This is particularly beneficial in the development of perceptual cognitive skills like spatial or motor abilities.

However, there is still a great deal of work to be done in the realms of theory, methodology and pedagogical practice. In particular, there is a need to define how the various technology and immersive features of VR interact with learning outcomes in different professional training contexts. A systematic review of the literature on this subject can aid in the selection of strategic resources by determining which VR features are critical to different types of skill-training.
